HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Arantxa Sanchez Vicario became the latest big name to pass up the Family Circle or fall down in the draw, losing Wednesday to Germany's Andrea Glass in three sets.

Only megastars Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova won more matches at Sea Pines than the 24 of former champion Sanchez Vicario, whose plucky, hard-charging style was counted on to bolster a tournament without much star power.

But Glass, ranked 94th in the world, dumped the seventh-seeded Spaniard 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 6-2. Sanchez Vicario had not lost an opening match in her nine previous Family Circles.
